Feel free to call it a comeback. The Mason Women’s Volleyball Team, facing a two-set deficit, stormed back to take home its eighth Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship last November, upsetting top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth University on the Rams’ home court.
Mason is the first team ever to rally from a 2-0 deficit and win the title in the CAA Championship match. The team went on to lose in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament in December, but not before turning in a solid performance against seventh-seeded Iowa State that marked the university’s seventh appearance in the National Tourney.
Junior Holly Goode and head coach Pat Kendrick added a pair of footnotes to one of the most successful seasons in recent history as they received the State Player and Coach of the Year Awards, as selected by a vote of Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSid). Sophomore Kelsey Bohman was selected to the VaSid All-State First Team.
Postseason accolades were heaped on Goode, who was recognized as an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-East Region selection, earned CAA Player of the Year honors, and was selected the Most Outstanding Performer of the CAA Championship. For her efforts during the tournament, she was named one of Collegiate Volleyball Update’s Top Performers. The Virginia Beach, Virginia, native was a two-time CAA Player of the Week and was named to three All-Tournament Teams in 2009.
