Name: Lana Zonjic
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Zagreb, Croatia
Major: Undeclared, but she is leaning toward business.
Why She Chose Mason: Zonjic did her research before deciding to study in the United States. Everyone she talked to reported positive experiences, but she was still uncertain about being so far away from friends and family. “Then I started talking to [women’s volleyball head] Coach Pat Kendrick, who helped me get rid of my doubts. I realized that coming to Mason would give me the chance to study at an excellent college and play volleyball at the same time. I didn’t want to miss that opportunity.”
What Sets Her Apart: An outside hitter on the women’s volleyball team, Zonjic was named Colonial Athletic Association’s Co-Rookie of the Year, made All-CAA third team, and was ranked third on the Mason team with 255.5 points (2.63 pps), including 212 kills and 32 blocks at the end of her freshman season.
What Surprised Her about Mason: Zonjic says they don’t have college campuses in Croatia, so she had to rely on movies and what people said to learn about them. “When I actually got here, the coaches and my teammates helped me adjust quickly. I don’t know how I would do without them—we are one big family.” In her time on campus, Zonjic has come to really enjoy the diversity. “Mason is like an entire world on a small scale. Everyone is very friendly and ready to help.”
Plans: Although she has her eye on a business degree, Zonjic admits she doesn’t really have big plans. “I do have a general idea about what I would like to do, but my plan right now is to work hard and give my best and just see where that takes me.”
