George Mason Birthday Event

Each year in December, the Alumni Association sponsors an event to honor the December 11, 1725, birth of university namesake George Mason. In the past, celebrations have taken place at George Mason’s home, Gunston Hall, and the homes of his compatriots, James Madison and George Washington. This year, we will complete his circle of distinguished Virginians and visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Plan to join us on Saturday, December 3, for a fun and educational day of history. A charter bus will leave the Fairfax Campus at 9 a.m., stopping for lunch at historic Michie Tavern and completing the day by touring Monticello.

Space is limited, so sign up now using the online form at www.gmu.edu/alumni or by sending a check to the Office of Alumni Affairs, 4400 University Drive, MS 3B3, Fairfax, VA 22030. Prices are $28 per adult, $23 per child (grades 7 through 10), and $15 per child (grade 6 and younger), and include bus transportation, lunch, and admission to Monticello.

Lifetime E-mail Forwarding Service for Alumni

As a free service to all alumni, the Alumni Association provides a lifetime e-mail forwarding service. With a Mason alumni alias, there’s no more worry about notifying friends, family, and colleagues about a new e-mail address. Simply visit the MASONline Alumni Directory and click on “E-mail Forwarding” to register for a free e-mail alias ([email protected]). Any e-mail messages that are sent to your alias will be forwarded to any account you choose! It’s that simple.

With this service, there is no account to check. E-mail is automatically routed from the “gmualumni.org” address to wherever the user tells it to go. One of the primary benefits of this service is to have an e-mail address that highlights pride in the university and affiliation with the alumni association.

Two New Alumni Chapters Formed

At its annual meeting in June, the Alumni Association approved the bylaws for two new chapters: the College of Education and Human Development Alumni Chapter and the Information Technology and Engineering (IT&E) Alumni Chapter.

The College of Education and Human Development Alumni Chapter met to elect officers for the 2005–06 year and held a chapterwide picnic in September. The newly elected officers are Diane Painter, BSEd '74 and PhD Education '94, president; Ann Kennedy, PhD Education '01, vice president; Karen LeCuyer, PhD Education '97; and Becca Des Jardin, MEd '05, secretary.

The school-based IT&E Alumni Chapter incorporates the former Computer Science Alumni Chapter and the Civil Engineering Alumni Chapter, and includes other current and former IT&E disciplines. The chapter will be led by president Sunil Tellis, BS Computer Science '01; president-elect Brian Dunbar, BS Computer Science '92; treasurer John Wolfe, MS Information Systems '02; and secretary Rob Scott, BS Computer and Electrical Engineering, '89, JD '94.

The College of Nursing and Health Science held a town hall meeting in September to discuss a significant expansion of its mission and related changes in organization and name. The proposed changes have been approved by the college faculty and the Department of Social Work, the units most involved. The Board of Visitors will vote on the proposed name, College of Health and Human Services, in October.
