Dean Updates
Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution - Sara Cobb, the executive
director of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School and a lecturer on
dispute resolution at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Department of
Urban Planning, was named the new director of the Institute for Conflict Analysis
and Resolution. Cobb, who came to Mason last August, has an extensive background
in conflict resolution as well as family therapy and communication. In 1995, Cobb
received the American Psychological Association's Psychotherapy with Women Award
in recognition of substantial and outstanding contributions to theory, practice,
and research of psychotherapy with women. Her extensive publications cover conflict
resolution, communication, and therapeutic themes. She earned her Ph.D. in communication
from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
School of Computational Sciences - Menas Kafatos has been named dean
of the School of Computational Sciences (SCS) for a two-year period beginning
July 1. Director of George Mason's highly successful Center for Earth Observing
and Space Research, Kafatos has been with the university since 1975. He is University
Professor of Interdisciplinary Science and a member of the Physics Department
faculty. He was founding director of the Institute of Computational Sciences and
Informatics, which joined the Institute of Biosciences, Bioinformatics, and Biotechnology
to become SCS in 2000. He also serves as vice president for education of the American
Astronautical Society.
School of Management - Richard Klimoski has been named dean of the School
of Management for a five-year term beginning July 1. Klimoski came to George Mason
in 1995 as a professor of psychology and director of applied experimental graduate
studies and the Center for Behavioral and Cognitive Studies. He served as associate
dean for outreach in the College of Arts and Sciences from 1997 to 2001.
Klimoski, a fellow of the Academy of Management, served on its board of governors
from 1990 to 1993 and as chair of the Personnel/Human Resources Division. He also
is a recipient of the academy's Heneman Achievement Award. From 1985 to 1987,
Klimoski was a member of the editorial board of the Academy of Management
Journal, and he was the senior editor of the Academy of Management Review
from 1990 to 1993.
