Author Jean Renfro Anspaugh, B.A. American Studies '77, has earned a reputation as the "folklorist of fat." Her book, Fat Like Us, has received national attention and was featured on 60 Minutes with Morley Safer. Anspaugh appeared on the Fairfax Campus in February for Reunion 2002 and spoke about her book. She is expected to return to campus this October for the annual Fall for the Book Festival.

Ernest Leong, M.A.I.S. '01, won the award for Best TV Movie of the Week at the 2002 Moondance Film Festival in Boulder, Colo., for his screenplay, Getting Along. The screenplay, which also placed as a semifinalist at the Sundance Film Festival, is inspired by his parents' real-life experiences.

Dawn Manigault, B.F.A. Dance '00, danced in Michael Jackson's 30th anniversary celebration at Madison Square Garden in New York City in September 2001.

Alumna Terry Hayes of Chesapeake, Va., had "the honor and privilege" to carry the Olympic flame in Alexandria, Va. She received a certificate in assistive technology from George Mason in 2001.

Francisco "Pancho" Bernasconi, B.A. Area Studies '90, is a national photo editor at the New York Times. He and his colleagues received the two Pulitzer Prizes given for photography this year. They were honored in the Breaking News Photography category for their "outstanding coverage of the terrorist attack on New York City and its aftermath" and the Feature Photography category for their photographs "chronicling the pain and perseverance of people enduring protracted conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan."
