A Record 6,900+ Graduate at Mason’s Annual Commencement

Once again, Mason celebrated the largest graduating class in the university’s history and perhaps the largest graduating class in Virginia on Saturday, May 17, in the Patriot Center. A total of 6,988 students received their degrees that day: 4,025 undergraduate; 2,500 graduate; 239 doctoral; and 224 law degrees.

Norman Augustine, retired chairman and CEO of Lockhead Martin, was this year’s Commencement speaker and the recipient of an honorary doctorate of science. Several other distinguished individuals also were recognized at this year’s ceremony. Mason awarded its highest honor, the George Mason Medal, to Milton Peterson, George Mason University Foundation trustee emeritus and former foundation chair, and his wife, Carolyn.

This year’s ceremony represents the 41st Commencement program in Mason’s history. The most popular majors this year were psychology, communication, government and international politics, accounting, and biology.
