Iris Newbury, B.A. English ’76, is a clinical psychologist. She received her Ph.D. in 1997 and California state licensure in 2001.

Robert Deuell, B.S. Biology ’78, a Greenville, Texas, Republican, claimed 54 percent of the ballots cast in last November’s election to win the District 2 state senate seat, defeating the incumbent who served for 26 years in the Texas legislature.

1980s

Kay Hutchison Benton, M.A. English ’82, has written a book, Ten Myths about Doctors and How You Can Dispel Them, which is being published by InchAlong Press.

James Kevin Sloan, B.A. History ’82, and his wife, Marjorie, traveled to Kazakhstan and adopted seven-month-old Robert Kevin Aslan Sloan in September 2001. James also spent three weeks at the Winter Olympic games in February 2002 working for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. He also worked for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games during the 1996 Summer Games.

Gregory G. Paspatis, B.A. History ’83, is a sales associate for Marine Corps Community Services. He is also a special writer for the Mount Vernon Voice newspaper, which covers the Alexandria area of southwestern Fairfax County in Virginia.

June Summers Haas, B.S. Economics ’83, has joined the law firm Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP. She will practice in the firm’s Lansing, Mich., office. June is the former State of Michigan commissioner of revenue.

Linda Morelli, B.A. Fine Arts ’86, announces that her second novel, Shadow of Doubt, published by Port Town Publishing, is now available.

Cynthia Leigh (Sutton) Fenton, B.S. Biology ’87, was married in 2000 and lives in Catlett, Va.

Mark Winegardner, M.F.A. Creative Writing ’87, has released a new collection of short stories, That’s True of Everybody, published by Harvest/Harcourt Inc. Also the author of The Veracruz Blues and Crooked River Burning, he is the Janet Burroway Professor of English and director of the creative writing program at Florida State University.

Quanah Crossland Stamps, B.I.S. ’90 and M.A. International Commerce/Policy ’00, has served as president of QCS International, which works to create business and employment opportunities in urban communities and provides strategic advice and technical assistance to Native American tribes. President Bush has stated his intention to nominate her to be commissioner of the Administration for Native Americans.

John P. Wise, B.S. Biology ’90, a toxicologist and Maine native, has been appointed to the University of Southern Maine’s Bioscience Research Institute of Southern Maine.

Kristin (Axelson) Cummings, B.A. English ’91, and Stephen Cummings, B.A. English ’93, had their second baby girl, Zoe Emma (B.S. 2024, her parents hope!), on June 10, 2002. Kristin became a licensed clinical social worker in 1999. The family lives in Richmond, Va.

Gary Glenn, B.A. Communication ’91, is the director of Internet operations and publications for the Tennessee Titans and oversees the team’s official web site, titansonline.com. He is entering his fifth season with the Titans and 10th overall in the National Football League.

Steve Hafner, B.A. Economics ’91, is the founder and CEO of HEP Development, a company that provides data enhancement to university development offices and has just signed its 500th client.

John Shumadine, B.A. International Studies ’91 and M.A. International Transactions ’93, and his wife, Christie (Lynch) Shumadine, B.S. Accounting ’91, welcomed their third child, Michael John, born on May 21, 2002. Michael John has two big brothers, Justin and Steven.

Carol Miklos, B.A. English ’92 and Art Studio ’95, married Derek Berry on May 6, 2002, at the Bailiwick Inn in Fairfax. Carol is a human resources assistant for the Hospices of the National Capital Region. The Berrys reside in Falls Church, Va.

Tammi Wark Marcoullier, B.A. English ’92, has her long-awaited book on the women’s Olympic bobsled team available for purchase. Sheila (Gass) Wright, B.A. English ’92, married Kevin M. Wright on September 28, 2002.

Sandra Cook, B.A Russian Studies ’93, works for Cricket Technologies as the litigation applications support specialist. Sandra earned a paralegal certificate in 1999 from Georgetown University.

Heather M. Downey, B.A. English and Speech Communication ’93, won second place in a national grant competition for integrating the arts in the classroom and received $2,000 from the P. Buckley Moss Foundation.

Julia A. Riddlemoser, M.A. English ’93, gave birth to her second daughter, Gabrielle Alina, on July 23, 2002.

Thom Shepherd, B.A. Communication ’93, was honored at the Nashville Songwriters Association Awards show in November 2002 where he and Wood Newton were presented with an achievement award for “Riding with Private Malone.”

David D. White, B.A. History ’93, graduated from Virginia Tech with a Ph.D. in Forestry.

Sybille A. Klenzendorf, B.S. Biology ’94, received a Ph.D. in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences from Virginia Tech and is working with the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, D.C.

Julie (Underwood/Jacobson) Modrzejewski, B.A. Government and Politics ’94, accepted a new position as assistant city manager for the City of Shoreline, Wash.

Teresa (Seyfried) Paccassi, B.A. English ’94, and Dave Paccassi, B.S. Urban Systems Engineering ’96, were married in 1998 and welcomed their first child, John Gregory, on August 5, 2002.

Dione (Howard) Sharmin, B.A. English ’94, received an M.S. in Transportation Policy, Operations, and Logistics from George Mason in August 2002.

Mark A. Calabria, Ph.D. Economics ’95, was appointed by the Bush Administration to the position of deputy assistant secretary for regulatory affairs within the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Raquel Patricia Chiquillo, B.A. International Studies/Spanish ’95, earned an M.A. in 1997 and a Ph.D. in 2001 in Spanish and Spanish-American Literature from the University of Virginia. Raquel is an assistant professor of Spanish at the University of Houston.

Michael Gilham, B.A. Biology ’95, has moved to Stockton, Calif., to teach biology. He formerly taught eighth grade science in the Fairfax County Public Schools.

Dallas Hutchison, B.S. Criminal Justice ’95, is currently the company commander for HQ/A Company, 510th PSB in Mannheim, Germany. He also is working on a master’s degree in Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma and is married to the former Rebecca Ann Zago of Sterling Heights, Mich. The couple has two sons and one daughter.

Fred Jorgensen, B.A. International Studies ’95, took a month off from his job as an account supervisor at TBC Advertising in Baltimore, Md., to travel through Africa with his wife, Mary Carole.

Jon Silverman, Ph.D. Economics ’95, has been promoted to partner at KPMG.

Michele Collins Hampton, B.S. Public Administration ’96, was married in 1997, had a daughter in 2000, left the management world in 2001, and earned her realtor’s license in 2002. She and her husband expect their second child in March 2003.

Ron Sorrell, M.A. History ’96, completed his Ph.D. in the History of Education at the University of Virginia in 2002. He based his dissertation, “Extending Public Higher Education into Northern Virginia: The Formative Years of George Mason University, 1949–1972,” on the branch college movement during the mid-20th century in Virginia.

Emily Symonds, B.A. English ’96, is the editorial assistant for Hemispheres Magazine in Greensboro, N.C.

Theresa “Tracy” Young, B.A. Biology and B.S. Psychology ’96, earned an M.S. in Zoology at the University of Oklahoma and is a behavioral neuroscientist with Psychiatric Genomics Inc. in Maryland.

Douglas Boyles, B.A. English ’97, is now working as a promotions producer for PBS in Seattle, Wash.

Troy Cornett, B.A. English ’97, is the associate editor of the ASPA-published periodical, The ASPA Journal, a pension-related association magazine published six times per year.

Christa Dalakis, B.A. Communication ’97, is an official member of the Greek National Softball Team and is looking forward to the 2004 Olympic Games.

Megan Ford, B.A. Psychology ’97, married Stephan Lemak on December 28, 2002, in Yorktown, Va. The couple resides in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. Megan’s sister, Kerry Ford Morancy, B.A. Psychology ’93, was her maid of honor.

Tennille Smith Parker, B.A. Government and Politics ’97, married Jerod McClinton Parker, B.S. Electrical Engineering ’97, on October 12, 2002.

Christian Zur, M.P.A. ’97, joined the law firm of Holland and Knight where he serves as senior policy advisor for the firm’s federal public law group.

Jon Boyle, M.S. Industrial/Organizational Psychology ’98, received a Ph.D. in Human Development from Virginia Tech’s Northern Virginia campus.

Gayle Allison Evans, B.A. History ’98 and M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction ’00, married James Lester Ogletree, B.A. History ’97, on July 27, 2002, in Fort Myer, Va.

Joshua Semerjian, B.A. Communication ’98, received an M.A. in Human Communication Studies from the University of Denver in August 2002. He now lives in Seattle, Wash.

Michelle (Gonyaw) Calabro, B.A. Psychology ’99, and Giovanni Calabro, B.A. Communication ’01, were married on August 17, 2002, in Lodi, N.J. The couple resides in Herndon, Va.

Kevin Greene, B.A. Government and Politics ’99, graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in May 2002 and started work as an associate with the firm of Willcox & Savage in Norfolk, Va., in October 2002. He married Becky Clemons, B.A. Communication ’98, in September 2002.

Jenny Matheson, M.A. Psychology ’99, graduated with an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Tech’s Northern Virginia campus.

Anne (Driggers) Muir, B.A. Communication ’99, married Justin Muir, B.S. Accounting ’99, on July 20, 2002, in Fairfax. Anne is working for NCI Information Systems in McLean, Va., and the couple lives in Ashburn, Va.

Andrew Wingfield, M.F.A. Creative Writing ’99, wrote Hear Him Roar, which will be published this year by Creative Arts Book Company. An earlier version of the manuscript was his M.F.A. thesis.

2000s

Carrie Teresa Sage, B.A. English ’00, has been pursuing a writing career and had poetry published in several journals. She and Nicolas A. Maison, B.A. Speech Communication ’98, plan to marry in September 2003.

Liam Callanan, M.F.A. Creative Writing ’01, will have his novel, The Cloud Atlas, published by Delacorte/Bantam Dell. When he isn’t writing, Liam teaches at George Mason and Georgetown University, and is a regular commentator for public radio station WAMU in Washington, D.C.

J. Lee Hill Jr., B.A. Integrative Studies ’01, has left the U.S. Department of Labor National Office of Job Corps in Washington, D.C., to pursue a master of divinity degree at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity.

Graziella D. Morse, B.A. Communication ’01, joined the President’s Own, the U.S. Marine Corps Band, in August 2002 as a public affairs specialist.

Kristin Anne Fieseler, M.F.A. Dance ’02, joined the faculty of DeSales University as an assistant professor of dance. Prior to this, Kristin served on the dance faculty at George Mason.

Joshua Thomas, B.A. English ’02, received his yellow belt in Tang Soo Do from Bushido Studios in Alexandria, Va.

Gary J. Dota, B.S. Business Administration ’72, lives in Poland, Ohio, with his wife, Carole. Their son, Matthew, is a senior at Ohio State University, and their daughter, Lisa, is a junior at Poland Seminary High School.

Alan James Dreher, B.S. Business Administration ’78, has been named assistant chief of the Atlanta Police Department. He previously served as commander of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s First Police District and was a 23-year veteran of that force.

Stephen Neal, B.S. Business Administration ’78, was appointed to the newly created position of senior vice president of store operations for Giant Food.

Mark E. McGettrick, B.S. Business Administration ’80, has been selected as Dominion Energy’s president and chief executive officer.

Walter Howell, M.B.A. ’84, is the executive vice president of financial services group at American Management Systems Inc., a business and information technology consulting firm in Fairfax.

Cheryl Fahl, B.S. Finance ’85 and M.S. Information Systems ’92, is a proud alumna, working as a senior program manager for FEDSIM, an information technology consulting firm.

Kathleen M. Davis, B.S. Accounting ’86, has been promoted to principal with the firm McLean, Koehler, Sparks and Hammond.

Michelle Burris, B.S. Marketing ’87, is the chief financial officer of Corixa, one of Seattle, Wash.’s, leading biotech companies.

Brian Galentine, B.S. Finance ’89, is living in Nashville and working as a songwriter under the name of Bryan Wayne. He recently wrote “What If She’s an Angel,” which was recorded by Tommy Shane Steiner and went to No. 2 on the country charts.

David C. Atkins, B.S. Decision Sciences’90, has been named regional director for the Association of College Unions International and has leadership responsibility for more than 100 universities and colleges located in Washington, D.C.; Maryland; West Virginia; Pennsylvania; and Northern Virginia.

Michelle E. Boardman, B.S. Accounting ’91, is an audit manager for Moreland and Associates Inc. in Newport Beach, Calif. She was married in 1994 and has four children: Kayla, Benjamin, Isabella, and Tyler.

Karen Groezinger Bell, M.S. Accounting ’94 and M.S. Taxation ’97, was promoted to manager at McGladren and Pullen LLP in Alexandria, Va.

William (Bill) Dorn, B.S. Business Administration ’98, and his wife welcomed twins to the family on June 21, 2002. Henry John and Kathryn Joy joined their older brother William.

Jaskirat (Jay) Lakhat, B.S. Finance ’99, is single and a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch in Washington, D.C.

Keith Michael Holdan, B.S. Finance ’00, is a financial advisor with BB&T, a subsidiary of Scott and Stringfellow.

Megan Keith, B.S. Decision Sciences ’01, is deploying a new computerized travel system for the U.S. military in her job as a research analyst/software implementation for TRW. She is also involved in volunteering for Celebrate Fairfax and plays in the Fairfax Adult Softball League.

1980s

Peter A. Stinson, M.Ed. Counseling and Development ’87, was appointed to a third two-year term as clinical director of the Tidewater Critical Incident Stress Management Team. The team provides crisis intervention services in southeastern Virginia to emergency services personnel following traumatic incidents. Peter also is the recipient of a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy to attend an eight-day professional development and personal restoration event on trauma in the community. He was honored to represent George Mason at the September 2002 inauguration of the new president at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., his undergraduate alma mater.

1990s

George D. Haber, B.S. Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Studies ’90 and M.Ed. Special Education ’98, and his wife, Carolyn Haber, B.S. Nursing ’94, announce the birth of their second child, John Elyon, on March 12, 2002. George earned a Ph.D. in Workforce Education and Development in 2002 from Penn State University and is now an assistant professor of career and technical education at Kent State University.

Carolyn Elverenli, M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction ’91, assumed the position of executive director for the University of Denver’s Fisher Early Learning Center on August 1, 2002.

W.H. “Billy” Emerson III, B.A. Physical Education ’96, is assistant director of institutional advancement and head baseball coach at Paul VI High School in Fairfax, as well as an associate scout for the Detroit Tigers. He and his wife, Lisa, have two daughters, Amanda (3) and Haley (1). Billy is pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Leadership at George Mason.

Dominique Charlotteaux, Ph.D. Education ’97, married Noel Haynes in 1999 and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she teaches education and psychology courses at Broward Community College.

Lori A. Passett, B.S. Physical Education ’99, has two children, Tobiah Marshall, born July 20, 1999, and Isaac Samuel, born May 18, 2001.

Imran Qayyum, B.S. Computer Science ’93, is a member of the Class of 2003 in the Management Technology Program at the Sloan School of Management at MIT.

Christine D. Balboni, M.S. Operations Research Management ’95, has been promoted to the rank of captain in the U.S. Coast Guard.

2000s

Raymond J. Schneider, Ph.D. Information Technology ’01, is an assistant professor of computer science at Bridgewater College in Virginia.

1970s

Ronald W. Kosh, J.D. ’78, has been appointed vice president of public and government relations for AAA Mid-Atlantic, the fourth largest AAA-affiliated motoring and travel club in North America.

1980s

Walter A. Wilson III, J.D. ’82, was appointed to a three-year term on the Bar Council for the Virginia State Bar and will continue on the bar’s Standing Committee on the Unauthorized Practice of Law.

1990s

Stephen K. Gallagher, J.D. ’94, and his wife, Kim, are the proud parents of Stephen Keith Gallagher Jr., born on June 27, 2002. Stephen Jr. has three sisters, Hope, Sarah, and Martha. Stephen Sr. is a partner in the Alexandria office of the Virginia-based law firm of LeClair Ryan.

Nursing and Health Science

1980s

Susan Lewsen, B.S. Nursing ’80, retired in September 2002 from the U.S. Army after 21 years. Her last assignment was as a nursing instructor in Salt Lake City, Utah.

1990s

Shelly L. Goodman, B.S. Nursing ’93, became the associate director of operations for global drug safety and pharmacovigilance for Chiron Corporation in November 2001. She relocated to Walnut Creek, Calif., and has four daughters, ages 2 to 10.

Adrienne Lynn (Dunning) Goodknight, B.S. Nursing ’94, is expecting her fourth child, who will join siblings, Meredith, Cody, and Austin. Adrienne is leaving the military to begin a career as a certified nurse midwife. She will continue to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

Linda Wientjes, B.S. Nursing ’95 and M.S. Nursing ’98, is working in the clinical outcomes and resource management department of the Medical Center of Central Georgia. She serves as a research scientist on hospital IRB, conducting a clinical investigation on BNP and NT-proBNP in heart failure, the first African American study for this blood test in the world.

Lillia M. Loriz (Li), Ph.D. Nursing ’96, was promoted to associate professor of nursing at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. She is also the coordinator for the M.S.N. program and has a clinical practice as a geriatric nurse practitioner at Mariner Healthcare in Macclenny, Fla.

Maureen E. Pellizzari, B.S. Nursing ’97, is married and has a beautiful son, Alexander. She is working per diem and loves the great schedule. She also leads an exercise class for pregnant women one evening a week. Maureen would love to hear from fellow nurses at [email protected].

Robert Schnekel, M.A. International Transactions ’92, was named federal security director for Roanoke Regional Airport by Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.

Michelle Sager, M.A. International Transactions ’95 and Ph.D. Public Policy ’99, is the author of One Voice or Many? Federalism and International Trade. The book includes a forward by Tim Conlan, and copies are available through the publisher at lfbscholarly.com or amazon.com.
