Arts and Sciences1970s Joan M. Beach, BA Sociology '73, was elected president of the Council of International Investigators at their 50th annual general meeting in September. Howell C. Sasser, MA History '74, retired from active ministry in the Diocese of Gibraltar in January 2005 and now lives in Fairfax. Howell was invested as a serving brother in the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem and intends to become active in the order's charity work. Kevin M. Brown, BS Law Enforcement '77, retired from the Fairfax County Police Department in 1998 after a 20-year career. He obtained a master's degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, in June 2002 and now serves on active duty with the Coast Guard, conducting port security planning. Kay Kamm, BA European Studies '77, served as the government relations professional for the Arlington Chamber of Commerce from 1995 to 2004 and recently became director of government relations in the Dallas, Texas, metro office of the American Cancer Society. Cathy Morris, BS Public Administration '79, was named vice president for business development at James Monroe Bank in the Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, markets. 1980s George Zombakis, BA Art History '83, has joined the staff of Rice University in Houston, Texas, in its School of Continuing Studies. D. Eric Schansberg, BS Economics and BA Math '86, and his wife, Tonia, announce the arrival of their son, Daniel Watchman, on October 15. Eric had his third book, Turn Neither to the Right nor the Left: A Thinking Christian's Guide to Politics and Public Policy, published by Alertness Books. Mark Winegardner, MFA Creative Writing '88, a novelist and English professor at Florida State University, has been on a speaking tour to promote his book The Godfather Returns, a sequel to Mario Puzo's bestseller, The Godfather. In November, he appeared on NBC's Today Show. Cynthia Kennedy, BA Government and Politics '89, is a new partner with Preston Gates & Ellis LLP in the Environmental, Land Use, and Natural Resources Group in the firm's Seattle, Washington, office. Robert Lee, BA English '89, with his spouse, Heather, opened a vintage clothing and jewelry store in Orange County, California. The store, Eleven Forty-One, sells one-of-a-kind encrusted jewels, beaded purses, and designer vintage dresses. 1990s Beth Hampton, MA Organizational Development '91, is the chief marketing officer for the Optical Society of America, a Washington-based association for advancing the science of light. Timothy F. Kennedy, BA Geology '91, a physical scientist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers working in Long Beach, California, just bought a new condominium 12 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. Carter Wilbur, BA Russian Area Studies and BA International Studies '91, married Sarah McLeod on September 25. He manages Flagship, a central clearinghouse for luxury charter yachts in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Michelle (Gladstone) Gedney, BA History '92, joined the Bank of America's Insurance Risk Management Team as vice president, property and casualty risk officer. She currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband, Kevin, and their 5-year-old daughter, Lauren. David Homard, BS Economics '92, received an MBA from Wake Forest University in August. David and his wife, Jamie, have a one-year-old daughter, Mattison. Susan (Knott) Scott, BA Communication '92, and her husband, Craig, announce the arrival of their daughter Halle Elizabeth on October 11. Susan is a senior account executive for Clinical Solutions, an international integrated marketing communications agency. Elisa D. (Stinchcum) Carlson, BA Government and Politics '93, formed the law partnership Commander & Carlson in Norfolk, Virginia. The firm emphasizes family law, adoptions, and workers' compensation. Elisa is a coauthor of Adoption Procedures and Forms: A Guide for Virginia Lawyers, published by Virginia CLE Publications. She earned her JD from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1997. Tobin Foryt, BA English '93, is the national sales and marketing director at ACM Medical Laboratory Inc. in Rochester, New York. Julie (Zurndorfer) Manning, BS Psychology '94, earned a PhD in school psychology from Temple University in May and married Brad Manning in June. The couple lives in Palo Alto, California, where Julie works at the California School for the Blind. Kevin Mulroe, BA International Studies/Spanish '94, is a gifted and talented resource teacher at Clemens Crossing Elementary School in Columbia, Maryland. He was named the 2004–05 Howard County Teacher of the Year and was one of seven finalists for the Maryland Teacher of the Year award. Fred Dean Sisk, MS Geography and Cartography '94, was appointed a deputy director general of the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England. Christine Parlatore Clingerman, BA English Writing '95, is a homemaker for her husband, Brian, and their daughter, Heather, and is expecting another child in May. Janet Mata-Hitz, BA Foreign Languages '96, received her MA in liberal studies from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, last May. John Misso, BA International Relations and Government and Politics '96, received a JD from Tulane Law School in May 2000 and an LLM from Georgetown Law School in June 2001. He is an in-house counsel for ExxonMobil in Houston, Texas, and is working on an Executive MBA through Tulane University in Houston. He expects to graduate in May 2006. Mary Mooney, BA English and Communication '96 and MAIS '03, and Eric Thornton, BS Economics '97, are engaged and planning a wedding from their home in Houston, Texas. The couple met at Mason and lived in Boston before moving to Texas in 2001. Mary is the director of communication for Healix Ltd., and Eric owns and operates Your Local Lender, a mortgage company. Whitlock, BA Government and Politics '96, completed a one-year clerkship with Judge Gerald Bruce Lee, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and is in another one-year judicial clerkship with Judge Ann Claire Williams, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago, Illinois. He has a JD from the University of Virginia and an MPA from Harvard University. Leslie Bosch, BA English '97, earned one of three Outstanding Service to the College awards presented to faculty and staff at the Northern Virginia Community College's annual convocation on August 19. Leslie is the production manager in the graphics unit of the Office of Public Information and Publications. The award was presented by the college's Educational Foundation and included $1,500; a plaque; and an invitation to the college's annual Educational Foundation dinner. Melanie Giarrantana, BIS Social Studies in Criminology '97, is business development and human resources director for Bulloch Brothers Engineering Inc. in Mesquite, Nevada. She also works for Nevada Community Solutions, ERA Brokers Consolidated, and as economic advisor to the mayor of Mesquite. In 2003, she was selected as Mesquite's Distinguished Citizen of the Year and Ambassador Emeritus for the City of Mesquite. Despite being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, she has succeeded in many areas and credits her Mason education with giving her the self-confidence to do so. Dennis Roch, MA English '97, was elected to a four-year term on the New Mexico Public Education Commission in November. He has been a teacher and coach at Texico High School for six years and will continue teaching during his service on the commission. Maxwell A. Carr, BA Government and Politics '98, earned a JD from Georgetown University Law Center in 2004 and joined the firm of Parker, Poe, Adams & Bernstein LLP in their Transactional Department. Joseph Thomas Hetrick, BA English '98, was selected to appear in the 2005 edition of Who's Who in America as a publishing executive and book author. Ana Cristina (Rojas) Gopalan, BA Psychology '98 and MEd '01, obtained her professional counselor license and certified substance abuse certification and is now a chemical dependency therapist with Kaiser Permanente. James W. Twaddell IV, BS Public Administration '98, joined the firm of Gardner Carton & Douglas in Washington, D.C., as a government relations director. He previously worked as a senior aide to Senator Arlen Specter and also as a legislative intern for Senator John Warner. Denan Brown, BA Communication '99, married Christopher Lance on June 5 in Barboursville, Virginia. The couple met as undergraduates at Mason in 1994. Denan is an advertising sales representative for the Observer Newspapers in Herndon, Virginia. The couple resides in Centreville. Youykham Chanthavilay, BS Biology '99, was awarded a doctor of optometry degree during the 88th commencement of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry held at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. 2000s Nicole Belote, BA Government and Politics '00, graduated with a JD degree from Regent University School of Law in 2004 and passed the Virginia Bar exam. She is an assistant commonwealth's attorney in the office of the Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney. Amy R. Earhart, BA English '00, is an assistant professor of English at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina. Megan Fraser, MPA '00, and her husband, Doug Garrett, announce the birth of their daughter, Zoey Marigold, in February 2004. Megan is a financial analyst in Reston, Virginia. Adam Thiel, MPA '00, is deputy fire chief of emergency services for the City of Goodyear (Arizona) Fire Department. Previously, he served as executive director of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. Jesse R. Lipcius, BS Psychology '01, a baseball alumnus, took the bar exam in Dayton, Ohio, and began his legal career with Freund, Freeze & Arnold, a 60-attorney litigation firm in Ohio. He was married in August in Williamsburg, Virginia. Jennifer A. Mowad, MA Individualized Studies '02, lives in Arlington, Virginia, and works for Freddie Mac doing product marketing and communications. Jamie Sims, BA English '02, published his first novel in February 2004 and started a new job as a writer and editor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in June. Business1960s Louis Kaufman, BA Business '69, owns and operates a green real estate sales office in Seattle, Washington, and is developing a 30-unit blended northwest design cottage housing project in Bellevue. He and his wife take trips often, including traveling to Spain to pick up a sailboat that they keep in the Mediterranean. 1980s Michael Clemens, BS Accounting '84, is the special agent in charge of the FBI in south Florida. Unofficially, he says he has a PhD in public corruption, but actually he is working toward a doctorate in counterterrorism. 1990s Richard Bulman, MBA '93, was appointed to the Talbot County seat on the board of directors for the Foundation for Rural Education and Development by Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich Jr. David Hulka, BS Management '96, married Shara Miller in December 2002 in Scottsdale, Arizona, and they now live in Chandler, Arizona. David recently completed a BS degree in accounting from the University of Phoenix. Mike Sylvester, BS Business Management '96, has been named national sponsorship manager for Feld Entertainment in Vienna, Virginia. The company produces Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus and Disney on Ice. 2000s Vanessa Lynn (Broadhurst) Looney, BS Management '04, moved to Norwich, Connecticut, and is in the U.S. Coast Guard Officer Candidate School. She plans to continue her education while an officer by attending the University of Connecticut's graduate program and earning a master's in human resource management. DID YOU KNOW? Thompson, BS Elementary Education '71 and MEd Administration and Supervision '79, is an Alexandria, Virginia, elementary school principal who was honored with a Distinguished Educational Leadership Award as 1 of 17 outstanding education leaders in the region. Daniel F. Curtin, MEd Administration and Supervision '75, is executive director, Chief Administrators of Catholic Education at the National Catholic Educational Association in Washington, D.C. He earned an MA in American history from the University of Notre Dame in 1983 and received an honorary doctor of humane letters from Mount Saint Mary's in 2001. 1990s Cathy Bonneville Hix, MA New Professional Studies in Teaching '98, was one of 20 educators recognized as a 2004 All-USA Teacher Team member in USA TODAY in October. 2000s Craig M. Visual and Performing Arts1980s Garrison Hull, BM '80, calls himself an amateur ethnomusicologist because he composes concert music based on the indigenous music of the Appalachian region. His most recent composition is Violin Sonata No. 2, "The Appleman," which he dedicated to virtuoso violinist Michael Appleman. 2000s Erin Chrisinger, BA Art (Studio) '03, is a design assistant at The Washingtonian, one of four people who design the magazine each month.
