New Warning System Up and Running

Mason Alert, a new information system designed to give students, faculty, and staff immediate access to emergency announcements, notifications, and updates during times of a major campus or area crisis, has passed the 10,000 mark in total registrations.

Formally launched on August 23, the service is free and voluntary. Registered individuals receive messages at their e-mail addresses or on their cell phones, text pagers, BlackBerrys, or wireless PDAs.

Registration for this service is open indefinitely. Interested persons can register any time at alert.gmu.edu or by texting the keyword “Mason” to 411911 on their cell phone.

It All ‘Ads’ Up

Last year, the university ran a series of advertisements in major national media, including Time, Business Week, Forbes, and U.S.News & World Report, to highlight prominent Mason researchers. This year, the focus is on our alumni; the ads began running in September.

The George Mason University Bookstore on the Fairfax Campus now carries eco-friendly and socially conscious clothing from edun LIVE, a clothing line whose entire manufacturing process, from growing cotton to shipping the product, occurs in sub-Saharan Africa. The bookstore also carries a line of eco-friendly products: notebooks and index cards made from recycled paper, and energy-efficient light bulbs for residence hall rooms or offices.
