Music Professor Dies at Age 58
Thomas Brawley, associate professor in the Department of Music, died of cardio-respiratory arrest at his home on Sunday, Feb. 11, following a brief illness. He was 58. Brawley had been a member of the faculty since 1975. Two memorial programs were held on campus in March and April to honor him.
Brawley taught courses in music history, including undergraduate offerings covering the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, and graduate specialty courses, such as those devoted to the study of Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. He also taught introductory courses for nonmajors (music appreciation and American music), coached piano ensembles, and was a faculty member in New Century College and the PAGE program.
Brawley served as the director of the department's Teaching Internship Program. As a scholar, he specialized in the music of the 19th century. Brawley belonged to the American Musicological Society, and he served as council member and president of the mid-Atlantic chapter of the College Music Society. In 2000, he began the George Mason chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music honor society.
