Leavenworth, Kan.Kevin Bowyer, B.S. Economics '76, has been appointed as editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. Deborah A. McCormick, B.A. History '76, received a $5,000 fellowship in July 1998 to study slavery at Stratford Hall Plantation (Robert E. Lee's birthplace). She was also named a department chairperson at Warren County High School and was commissioned an Honorary Kentucky Colonel by the governor of Kentucky. Marilyn Stearn, B.A. Sociology '76, began her own business Marilyn Stearn & Associates, a permanent placement staffing firm in Washington, D.C. Kevin Dunleavy, B.A. Geography '78, is a sports editor at DCI Publications. Christine Doner, B.A. English '79, was appointed vice president at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in Houston, Tex.
1980sMichelle Smith Simmons, B.A. Sociology '81 and M.P.A. '84, was elected president of Virginia Housing Coalition in June 1998. Karen L. Clark, B.A. Government and Politics '83, completed a master's program in learning disabilities in fall 1998 at Virginia State University. Beverly Tucker Schaeffer, B.A. English '85, has been married for 10 years to Tabb Schaeffer, and the couple has two children, a 7-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. Beverly does editing and graphic design from her home office for International Test & Evaluation Association (ITEA), Journal of Test & Evaluation. Nicolette Stearns, B.A. Communication '85 and M.Ed. '92, can be seen on various cable channels in a commercial for Ormsby's International. She also played an attorney on CNN's "Burden of Proof." She continues to teach beginning and intermediate acting at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md. Adele C. McCormack, B.S. Biology '86, has received designation of CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) in 1998 and will be a docent at the National Arboretum this year. Adele works for American Society of Pension Actuaries as director of meetings. Allan R. Plumley III, B.A. Economics '86, will attend Harvard University's Executive Leadership Program this year and is busy as a principal with Dinte Resources Inc., a retained executive search firm. D. Eric Schansberg, B.A. Math and B.S. Economics '86, adopted a baby, David Zachary (Zach) and became tenured in 1998 at Indiana University in New Albany, Ind. Rick E. Strong, B.A. Psychology '87, completed his second master's degree, an M.Ed. with teacher certification, in August 1998 at Central Washington University. He now team teaches with his wife in a special districtwide program for seriously emotionally disturbed students K-6, in Marysville, Wash. Bill Swiggard, B.S. Chemistry '87, received a Ph.D. from Rockefeller University in 1995 and an M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1996. He is married to Una O'Doherty. Stacey R. Simkins, B.A. English '88, traveled extensively throughout the United States and British Isles for several years before returning to the Washington, D.C., area. She has returned to George Mason as an employee in the English Department and represents employees on the Virginia Compensation Reform Employee Advisory Committee. Alexander Levin, B.F.A. Theater Design '89, started an around-the-world trip with his wife in January 1999. Barbara (Clark) Maddox, B.A. Government and Politics '89, married Michael Maddox, B.A. Government and Politics '87, in 1989. They have two children, Winona and Shannon, ages six and four. Julie K. Neumann, M.P.A. '89, is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force and has assumed command of 22nd Intelligence Squadron of the Air Force Intelligence Agency in Fort Meade, Md., in July 1998.
1990sKathleen (Connolly) Brown, B.A. Psychology '90, a school social worker in Roselle, Ill., will be moving to Sterling, Va., in June due to her husband's transfer. They are expecting their first child. Tin Y. Tai, B.A. Economics '90, has been working at Mobil Corporation in Fairfax, Va., since July 1998. Irene Safarik Zaso, B.A. International Studies '90, and her husband, Andrew, announce the birth of their first son, Nicholas, on December 21, 1998. Amy (Butterfield) Cole, B.A. Speech Communication '91, was promoted to vice president and chief operating officer of The Forbes Group, a nationally known strategic management counseling firm in Fairfax, Va. She also serves on the Forbes board of directors and lives with her husband, Michael, in Manassas, Va. Tatia (Knuettel) Troy, B.A. Speech Communication '91, married Christopher Troy and lives in the Philadelphia area. Debbie (McCarren) Troy, B.A. Communication '91, was an attendant at their wedding and ended up marrying Tatia's brother-in-law. Tatia and Christopher have a three-year-old son, John Christopher (Jack). Tatia is the human resources manager for Therakos, a Johnson & Johnson company. Soma Dutta-Bose, B.S. Biology '92, married Sudeep Bose, B.S. Psychology '93. Soma is an optometrist for the Hour Eyes chain and is licensed in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia. Sudeep is the principal member and primary trial attorney for the Bose Law Firm, PLLC, a multidisciplinary firm with clients in Virginia, New York, Maryland, D.C., and South America. Furqan Nizami, B.S. Economics '92, has been living in Pakistan since his graduation and is the foreign exchange manager for National Bank of Pakistan. Aaron Culton, B.A. English '93, received a J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law in 1997. Jeffrey McDaniel, M.F.A. Creative Writing '93, had his second book of poetry, The Forgiveness Parade, published by Manic D Press of San Francisco. Lorrie Ann Sinclair, B.A. Government and Politics '93, graduated from William and Mary Law School in 1996 and is employed in Virginia Beach. She plans an April 1999 wedding and alums Diane Guthrie-Gresham and Lisa M. Major will be bridesmaids. Darien C. Small, B.A. English '93, of Bradford, R.I., is teaching multimedia and other applications courses in the Computer Information Systems Department of Bristol Community College, Fall River, Mass. Lorene Ward, B.A. English '93, was a semifinalist in the Poetry Guild writing contest in September 1998. In October 1998, she received a letter and Apostolic Blessing from Pope John Paul II in response to several original poems she sent to him. Christine (Fitzgerald) Weidman, B.A. Psychology '93, was married in November 1998 and is expecting her first child. James P. Wood, B.A. Geography '93, of Falls Church, Va., earned a master's degree in forestry from Virginia Tech in January 1999. Kim Lawrence Yeager, B.A. Speech Communication '93, a conference manager for a Washington, D.C., area trade association, and her husband, Charles, welcomed a baby boy, Jake Richard, on December 30, 1998. Christopher L. Daub, B.S. Psychology '94 and M.A. Neuropsychology '97, lives in Tappahannock, Va. He is a psychologist for the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Corrections and teaches at Rappahannock Community College in Warsaw. He expects to complete his assention to 1st Dan, Blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do by the end of the year. Joy R. Shankles, B.A. Anthropology '96, a Navy Petty Officer Third Class, is assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and participated in Operation Desert Fox. Betsy Andrews, M.F.A. Creative Writing '97, had a text-based sculpture in a juried international art show in New York City. The show, Liberty Enlightening the World, commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Bill Blanton, B.S. Geology '97, is engineering section leader for Dewberry & Davis. Carol Byers, M.P.A. '97, has been selected as manager of the Washington Office for the Los Angeles County, Calif. Mary Elizabeth (Duncan) Harvey, B.A. Speech Communication '97, married Brian Harvey in 1997 and they live in Oklahoma City, Okla., where they are team trainer and team supervisor with the AT&T Division of Convergys Corporation. Steven C. Jones, M.S. Chemistry '97, is a full-time student in the doctor of pharmacy program at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Wendi Kaufman, M.F.A. Creative Writing '97, sold the stage production rights to her story "Helen of 86th Street" to Century Center in New York City. Kyle P. Riley, B.A. History '97, has been on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf aboard the dock landing ship USS Pensacola, homeported in Little Creek, Va. He joined the Navy in March 1991, and is now an ensign. Nathan N. Tran, B.S. Biology '97, is studying medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. Lourdes R. Godoy, B.A. Foreign Languages and Literatures '98, a Navy seaman, has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Sarah Kozer, B.A. Communication '98, is studying at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, Calif. Joshua Jay Semerjian, B.A. Speech Communication '98, works for Community Living Alternatives, Inc., as an employment consultant in the developmental disabilities field. He lives and works in Aurora, Colo. Michelle Sherfey Vislay, B.A. Sociology '98, has returned to George Mason to work on a master's degree in early childhood education. She and Eric Vislay were married in October 1998 and bought a townhouse in Fairfax, Va.
