Before the Final Four, there was the slaughter of Delaware State in 1995. This game might not be imprinted in the minds of many Mason basketball fans, but for Joe Little, it was one of his most memorable college experiences. He was a small forward on George Mason University’s men’s basketball team—but he rode the bench.
Kathy Menefee: The Professional Student
When you are a full-time mother and a full-time hospital nurse executive, as well as a part-time student, it can be hard to find the time to breathe. And yet Kathy Menefee, who earned her MS in Nursing Administration in 1993, found plenty of time to talk to whoever would listen about her love for her alma mater.
Barry McCabe shows his Mason pride halfway across the world from Fairfax. A civilian contractor with the U.S. government, he has spent the past 21 months in Iraq. He contacted the George Mason University Alumni Association about obtaining several Mason flags to bring with him overseas and has made it his personal mission to get his photo taken with the flag in various locales in the Middle East, as well as Western Europe.
Laura May is the ultimate George Mason University hyphenate. She’s a Mason parent-alumna-advisor-fan. Oh, and did we mention she’s an alumna two times over? She spends her days being a figurative Mason cheerleader, singing the school’s praises to former students and parents of students, her daughter’s friends, and of course her daughter, who recently graduated from high school.
Josh Holman: The Sports Fanatic
Because he couldn’t bring Mason with him when he and his wife moved to Illinois a few years ago, Josh Holman decided to create his own shrine to his alma mater. He created a Mason Room—a green and gold man cave where he could watch all the basketball games on television. “Since I wouldn’t be able to catch every game at the Patriot Center, I wanted a place that would feel like I was almost there,” he says.
When it came time for Alia Zeitoun to pick a college to attend, it was a no-brainer. Both of her brothers went to Mason and she appreciates the university’s diverse student population. Though Zeitoun just graduated in May with a BS in Accounting and a minor in Economics, she didn’t approach Commencement with the worry of many other job-seeking recent grads—she had already found a job, thanks to Mason.
