Green Machine Alums! Your Old Band Needs You

By Jason Jacks on February 28, 2011

Members of the wildly popular and all around most amazing pep band in all the land, the Green Machine, are looking for former members to help tell the history of the band.

Mason's pep band, the Green Machine.

“We’re trying to get the word out to our alumni that we are searching for information on the band,” says Jessica Berg, a junior who sings and plays clarinet in the Green Machine.

Among some of what the band is seeking are game memorabilia, photos, video, articles, most memorable performances, band director names, information and/or photos of old uniforms, and other stories of your old playing days in the Green Machine.

Berg says the band has a good grasp of its history since Michael Nickens became director in 2006. The problem is finding band stories and artifacts of the pre-Doc Nix era.

Through Berg’s initial research, the band, they think, was founded sometime in the 1970s (though Doc Nix thinks it was earlier that that, says Berg). It has also grown substantially, from about 40 members just as of the Final Four year of 2006 to more than 100 now.

Of late, the band became a recent internet hit with its rocking performance of two Rage Against the Machine songs.

With the history project, Berg says, the band hopes to create a “scrapbook” on the band’s website, where information can be constantly updated. Berg says the more help they get from band alum, the better the project will turn out.

“We’ll take anything they are willing to share.”
