Call for Volunteers!
Are you looking for a way to contribute time and talent to your alma mater? If you are interested in helping to shape the lives of Mason students or help create the next class of undergraduates, we have opportunities for you. The following programs connect alumni with students and prospective students in meaningful ways.
- The Alumni Admissions Network, coordinated by the Office of Admissions, allows alumni to conduct admissions interviews with prospective students. George Mason is the only public university in Virginia, and one of the few in the country, that requires an admissions interview of all prospective freshmen. The interviews are generally conducted on campus to give students a sense of the environment. Having the opportunity to speak with alumni also gives students insight into the Mason experience. The interview is a critical component of the student's application for admission; therefore, the feedback provided by the interviewer truly impacts the evaluation process. For several months beginning in January of each year, hundreds of applicants are interviewed every week, and the Office of Admissions is always on the lookout for new, energetic, and enthusiastic volunteers. Alumni who participate in the program are trained in the interviewing process and can choose to interview students during the week or on Saturdays. - The Career Connection program, coordinated by the Office of Career Services, provides students with the opportunity to interact with alumni in their field of interest. Alumni are a valuable source of information and support to students who may be venturing out into the world of work for the first time or are simply exploring a variety of options. Alumni find the service useful for networking purposes as well. Currently, about 250 alumni have volunteered to become part of Career Connection. They assist students who contact them in a variety of ways, including offering tips on résumé writing, class selection, and career options; giving informational interviews; offering opportunities for students to "shadow" them on the job; and speaking at career-related seminars. This past summer, Career Connection broadened its reach by providing access to the Internet via the Career Services homepage at www.gmu.edu/departments/cdc. - On May 2, more than 150 alumni and friends of George Mason gathered in The Plains, Virginia, for the 73rd running of the Virginia Gold Cup Races. The Alumni Association hosted a hospitality tent (see page 10) for the seventh consecutive year, providing refreshments and a forum for greeting old friends, making new acquaintances, and enjoying a day at the races. Help us build this great Mason tradition by joining us next year. The Gold Cup is held annually on the first Saturday in May.
- George Mason University is breaking with tradition! Homecoming 1998 will be in February 1999! Mark your calendars now for a Mason Homecoming like you've never seen before. Homecoming weekend, February 19-20, will feature a wide variety of social, cultural, and athletic events culminating in the George Mason/American University basketball game and Homecoming Dance on Saturday, February 20. Make plans to join us in the Patriot Center parking lot for tailgating and other pregame entertainment. You may want to consider organizing a group of classmates and friends. - The Office of Alumni Affairs has joined the Center for the Arts and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to present George Mason University's first ever Alumni Singles Series, which includes the following events.

Forensics Alumni Forensics Team alumni are organizing an official Alumni Association group and are seeking interested members. Eligible for membership are former George Mason Forensics Team members or former coaches who went to Nationals at least once.
