The Broadside Alumni AssociationPerhaps unlike any other group, the Broadside Alumni Association understands the importance of communications. This emerging association of alumni who were once student journalists are using the World Wide Web to announce their initiatives and keep members in touch with one another. The group is finding that use of this technology can be a valuable tool to promote the organization to prospective members and offer various professional development and career resources. The site offers information about journalism jobs and internships, as well as links to news organizations and professional associations. The web page also houses the Broadside Alumni Association's online directory.

Cesar Soriano, the site's creator, was recognized by the association for his work on the online resource. Awarded the association's first Outstanding Service Award, Soriano built the site on his own with the alumni organization in mind. The association adopted the site and is currently using it to inform members about journalism-related topics.

"Cesar's work on the site has been a major factor in the success of our organization," says Michelle Hankins, Broadside Alumni Association president. "His efforts to create an online presence for the group has proven to be one of the best ways we can reach alumni."

In addition to the website, the group is using electronic distribution lists to inform members about events and opportunities. One member informed list subscribers about a contract position available through his company. Another has discussed job and internship openings for several of the nation's largest newspapers. The association's officers are using the electronic arena to hold discussions, plan events, and vote on agenda items. Members even have used the list to look for roommates from among a group of people with common interests.
