From Dolly Parton to Megadeth: A Flickering Tribute to Mason’s Musical Scene

Over the past 30+ years, Mason’s 10,000-seat arena has been a big part of campus life and the Northern Virginia community. Since its 1985 opening, the Patriot Center (now EagleBank Arena) has been visited by more than 12 million patrons for more than 3,600 events that have ranged from ultimate fighting to the Harlem Globetrotters.

Meet the Mason Nation: Saskia Clay-Rooks

Saskia Clay-Rooks, executive director of Mason’s University Career Services, is constantly updating the programs and web resources offered to ensure they are timely and relevant to students in their career search. While plenty of resources are available online, she looks to provide students and recent graduates with other opportunities—the biggest of which are the connections her staff is able to facilitate between students and employers, alumni, or faculty.
Building a Mystery

This fall Mason English professor and novelist Laura Ellen Scott, MFA ’93, saw the release of the second book, Crybaby Lane (Pandamoon Publishing, 2017) in her New Royal Mysteries trilogy. The books revolve around a university and its crime writing program in the fictional Ohio town of New Royal.
Bringing Business to Life: Leaders in the Classroom

More than 60 alumni take part each year in the School of Business Leaders in the Classroom series. Organized by the school’s advancement and alumni relations team, the series puts alumni in the classroom as guest speakers on industry-related topics. In the 2016-17 academic year, the series coordinated 80 classroom visits.

Where the Wild Things Grow

On the south side of the Fairfax Campus, between the Art and Design and Nguyen Engineering Buildings, there is a space where wild things grow. This outdoor classroom/learning lab is called the Green Studio, and George Mason University just might be the only university with such a space.

Where Cars Park, Green Roof Grows (Video)

The Rappahannock River Parking Deck on Mason’s Fairfax Campus recently got a new roof—a green roof, to be specific—as part of a graduate research project. The green roof was built with the assistance of two graduate students, who will be conducting their own research on different aspects of the roof.
Condensing Five Years into Three Minutes

Who says the fun of competitions has to be reserved for sports and reality television? Mason’s new Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is changing that. An annual international competition that originated in 2008 at the University of Queensland, Australia, 3MT has quickly spread to more than 350 universities in 58 countries around the world. In it, PhD students compete to see who is best able to captivate an audience with their years of research in three minutes or less.
